Default Please help... car won't turn over!

hi, my name is Ryan and i'm currently working on a 4.6L SOHC with an auto transmission. I have just finished replacing the timings chains, guides, tensioner arms, and tensioners. here is my problem....

i made sure that the timing marks all line up on the cams and the crank sprocket, the new chain came with marked links, everything is tight and looks exactly how it should which was verified through a search on here and found pics... when i turn the crank by hand it will turn 1/2 crank and lock up and then will turn 1/2 crank the other direction and lock up again... i cant figure out what is wrong with it and hope somebody can steer me in the right direction.... thank you

well you probably didnt have number 1 cylinder at top dead center to start.,....and our engines our interfernce motors...when u crank it by hand and the motor stops turning...thats a valve hitting a pistion...thank god ur doing by hand and not causing damage...i hope.....

now somehow u have to get number 1 cylinder at top dead center and re time the chains and everything

its sitting right now with the key at 12 o'clock on the crank and all timing marks line up... what do u suggest i do? could it possibly be off TDC and be exactly the opposite? and if so, how would i get it to top dead center? pull the plugs and cams then spin the crank over 1 revolution?

with the key at 12 it cant either be at TDC on end of compression stroke or TDC at end of exhaust stroke...
but you want it at TDC RIGHT after the compression stroke..so what you do is take all the chains off...take out the number 1 cylinder spark plug...acually all of the spark plugs bc it will be easier to turn the motor ... (just dont strip them putting them in...NIGHTMARE) .. but what u do is get a light look down the number 1 clyinder hole...u should see the pistion alittle anways...what u do is with the Chains OFF...turn the motor...put your ear/eye by the spark plug hole...and when you hear air comming out of the SPARK PLUG Hole..ull feel it to if ur close enough which u should do...u know ull be on end of compression stroke at TDC and key should be close to like 10-11. 12 is straight up and down and if u lok at timing cover it says by crank 10* BTDC and TDC .. and they arent at 12

only thing i am trying to figure out is....seeing with timing chains off the valves wont move seeing as that wont happen u really cant tell what stroke your on...so if your motor wont turn a full revolution or 2... ya really cant tell what stroke your on...

hmmm

yeah thats why i was wondering if i should take the cams out so the pistons wouldnt hit the valves or is it possible to get all the valves shut and still leave the cams in? i could look in and visually check the piston in comparison to the crank so i'll know its at TDC but just wouldnt know if it's on compression orexhaust stroke... but id still have a 50/50 shot, i guess the biggest problem is gettin the crank to spin without inteference...

it has to be at 12 o clock for the crank key. then fold the chains in half and mark them. then put the ends on the timing marks.
