im having the same issue with my wifes 98gt. she had the motor replaced last winter with a factory ford 4.6. i dont know what all is from the old motor and what is from the new. fuel pump seems likely in my case though. it takes engaging the fuel pump several times and then cranking it to get it started. or you start it and it runs up to idle then shuts down. only when it has sat overnight or for the whole day.
the first post also sounds like it could be an idle air control valve. VERY similar symptoms with it not starting after cranking and dying at idle.

Default Trouble starting - 98' v6

My mustang seems to be having very similar symptoms minus the cold weather and dying from idle. Every time I go to start my car it seems to take at least 5-10 revolutions before my engine kicks over. Once its up and running it drives and idles normal. I've been working on the issue for a number of months now and nothing seems to be working. I've replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs & wires, coil pack, fuel inj. cleaner three times. My check engine light is still on though my battery, starter and alternator are fine. Diagnostics read "misfire" and ... I want to say "engine malfunction?" I can't remember off the top of my head. Anyways, considering I've been having this issue for well over three months I want to rule out the fuel pump, because at this point it should have gone out on me. Any suggestions? One last thing... I also went to AutoZone to rent a fuel pressure gauge, plugged it up, turned the engine on and read it. The gauge said "0." Absolutely no pressure. Is that even possible for my engine to be running and have z.e.r.o pressure?? It baffled me and I figured their gauge was broken because the bleeder on it did release some fuel. All in all any insight in this matter would be great.

My car did this to me this morning. It seems to always take a bit of cranking to start but today after sitting 2 days without running it wouldn't start for nothing. Finally after cycling the key on and off for a bit and whacking on the fuel tank it started up and ran normal. Went ahead and picked up a SVT Focus fuel pump today for it. Going to start here with mine since the tank is not a big deal to drop.
