Default shock replacement

I'm replacing the front and rear shocks. I haven't looked that closely at it. But Ford calls the frontsetup a strut. It doesn't look like a Macpherson shock/spring combination though. So I'm wondering,do I have to compress the springs to replace the front shocks?

Thats because it is a strut. You gotta a strut and coil spring.

It's often described as a "modifed" MacPherson suspension becausethe strutdoes locate the wheel and participate in steering, however it does not support the weight of the car as does a real MacPherson.

Thanks for the replies. Looks fairly straight forward. But from looking at the arrangement, I would guess that an alignment might still be needed afterward. What do you think?
