I would try the axle/carrier bearings myself, but being that I got a lot of freeplay elsewhere I don't see a point in it. Do you get a noticeable clunk when you go from neutral to reverse?

I have a 5 speed but i do get a clunk sometimes in first gear when i let the clutch out after a stoplight. If i do in fact have to mess with the shims to replace the carrier bearings, i will probably end up buying 3.73 gears and throwing those in when i do the bearings. the bearings should take care of the roaring noise and the gears(with proper shims) should take care of the clunk.
