Default Cost to rebuild a rear end?

Hey all!

The car was making a funny noise, especially at low RPMs. I took it in for a mechanic to check it out, and he said that I need to get the rear end rebuilt. I know NOTHING about this... he said he thought the costs would be between 1000 and 1500, figuring about 7 or 8 hours of work at roughly 80 bucks an hour. Does this sound appropriate? Can anyone possibly tell me exactly what "rebuilding the rear end" entails? I know VERY little about the transmission and all

Thanks so much!

Darnit. And what would that entail? And the kicker; if they are rebuilding my rear end, should I have them use specific aftermarket parts to make sure it doesn't break again?

Thanks!

Mine was going to cost about that much but I found a used rearend assembly for cheaper at a salvage yard with 20,000 miles on it so i bought it for $600 and the total came out to like $860 aftermy mechanicdid the install.

If you are already going to rebuild it, might as well go with a 31 spline setup. That would be a 31 spline carrier, 31 spline axles, a master install kit (with bearings) and then a gear ratio of your choice. While you're at it, you may want to get a rear end girdle as well. All of this, then gear oil. Not sure what you have to do in regard to the anti-lock break stuff.

Sorry to hijack, but do you need a bearing kit if you already did gears in your stock rear...but now want to build up the rear and keep the same gears?

Probably not. How long ago did you put the gears in, and did you replace the bearings then?

Eh, I would say about a year- a year and a half ago. Possibly 7-8k miles. And yes I did the complete bearing rebuild kit.

good way to start, of course your going to need to get what ever gears you decide to go with and the bearing kit.
