4:10 Gear Install
Imgoing to install my410s this saturday at my friends garage. I have the motive master install kit also. My question is, will I need a compressor of some sort to do the master bearing install? I know its not needed for the gears alone but that it may be required for the master bearing. Im not familiar with this tool needed for this so is it something that I can pick up at auto zone or is it a shop specialty tool? Thanks for the help!

RE: 4:10 Gear Install
When I did my gears I had to take my the old pinion, the carrier and the new pinion to a machine shop. I needed to get the old bearing pulled off of the stock pinion in order to measure the shim thickness. I also needed to get the new bearing pressed onto the new pinion after getting the correct shim (I used the MHD method), as well as the old bearings pulled off of and the new bearings pressed onto the carrier.
Unless you have a bearing press/puller and know how to use it, you are probably going to have to do the same.
The bearing races just got hammered into place. Make sure that if you don't have a big enough socket to use to set the races, you walk around the race with a punch to be sure you set it in evenly.

Ok so then I do need the press/puller. Thats what I was afraid of. Im in a position to get them put on for free but my friend cant install the mater bearing kit b/c he said he does not have the press/puller. Do you think ill be ok with just installing the ring and pinion with out the master bearing kit?

RE: 4:10 Gear Install
A local machine shop only charged me about $20 or $40 (It was a while ago, I don't remember the exact figure) to pull all the bearings and press on the new ones. If you are doing the MHD method you are going to need to pull off the pinion bearing to measure the shim thickness. I couldn't get it off myself. The heating of the bearings in boiling water didn't work for getting the new ones on, either. That's when I said to hell with it and dried them off really good and took them to the machine shop. Was much easier that way.
