Default RE: should I get gears?

I am in the market for gears also and have bee looking at the 4.10's but after talking with another member on here that has a auto and 4.10's I am leaning to the 3.73's because of the rpm's on the highway. I do take some longer trips in my stang and want to keep the rpm's down on the highway. Here is what his rpm's were at on the highway with auto and 4.10's

60- 2300
70- 2800
80- 3100
85- 3300

90- 3500

That is the speed that I normally cruse at and am not sure about cruseing at thoes rpm's for a long time. Anyone have any idea what the mpg would be at thoes speeds in a auto? Right now I can get about 300 miles to a tank on the highway, so I am thinking that if I got 4.10's I would loose about 40-60 miles per tank on the highway. Does this sound about right?

I got my 3.73's from ebay for less than $100.00 and labor for installation was about $220.00 including speed cal. You need to shop around, you will not be dissapointed with 3.73's.
Good luck on your search.

I'd stick with 3.90's....I just got them on my 00GT and was not at all disappointed. My friend wit a 99 Cobra and 4.10's said he couldn't believe how great the acceleration had changed.

4.10 are good if you don't do allot of highway driving. I put on 3.73 and there's a noticable difference from the stock 3.29. This diffinately w/ wake up your auto.
4.10 would be nice, but not on the highway. Im running almost 3000 at 75. Seems like alot of hassel from what I read on the forums for the 3.90 and the install. It looks liek yeayea didn't have problems w/ his. It may be the happy medium. Good luck.

The gearfs are Motive. I just had them put in yesterday. My mech. told me to drive it all weekend and to bring it back on Mon for a final adjustment. It whines now, but has gotten better. After he adjusts it I will let you know how it sounds. I love the way it moved the power down. 5th gear is now usable on the highway - it pulls strong. Gas mileage has dropped, but who gives a rat's ***, right? I drive on the highway fairly often, so 4.10's would have been a bit much. I feel I made the right choice, but it really all depends on what you want.
