IAC is the Idle air control. According to Ox it will start with it unplugged. And I would trust him.

If you backfired thru your intake then your timing is off. Or you have a bad cam position sensor. Take your altenator off and bring it to get tested at auto zone.

My bro also said the timing must be off to backfire thru the intake. So I pulled the timing cover back off and rechecked it again. What could I be missing that I have the timing wrong? I have new heads now because I had the timing off by a tooth or two and bent valves. Gotta love those ZERO and I do mean ZERO clearance motors. I have already paid dearly for that expensive mistake once. The cam sensor is new. Not to say it could not be a defective right out of the box. And the old one worked fine too before the teardown. Can the alternator being bad keep it from starting? Even though the battery is showing 13.6 volts and cranking over just fine?

So, to get the good news or bad news. My next task will be to do a compression test. Surely if I have the cam timing off and I bent valves again, the cylinders would leak down and lose compression very quick. I do not think this is the problem though. Last time I was a tooth off, and as soon as I cranked the engine, it sounded like all heII broke loose when the valves bent but even then, the engine started. Sound like the most sickening thing you would ever hear, but nevertheless, it did start and ran as long as I kept the RPM up to about 2000. Just for the purpose of eliminating that being the problem, I will do a comp test. Any suggestions are still welcomed.... except, is the battery hooked up. LOL

Stupid question, but did you reinstall the crank trigger wheel?

Good suggestion. But yes I did. I even thought maybe I had it backwards, so when I took the timing cover off to re check the timing, I also made sure the trigger was installed properly in the right direction. It is keyed to the crank right?

my advice would be get access to a scan tool. access data display and monitor the rpm while cranking and the cam counts. if you have neither/either or only one then there is your problem. you say they are new but maybe you have some damaged wires, plugs, etc. if your cam timing was off to the point that it wouldnt start in most cases you would get a backfire through the intake (even when your not spraying starter fluid).

I am not at the car now, and have not paid any attention to the tach while cranking. I will check that as soon as I get to the car again.
