Default Rack & Pinion replacement

I have a 1999 mustang GT. I have had a squeaking noise every time I rotate my steering wheel cw or ccw for a while now. My mechanic told me it was the rack-n-pinion that needs to be replaced. I want to replace it my self, and looking at it seems that the job is really simple. Yet I was hoping someone can give me some input on how to replace it, because I don’t want to mess with something as important as steering.
Thanks

I dont know much at all about this, but im fairly certain you will need to bring it into a shop for an alignment afterwards.

This may or may not be relevant to your problem...

Crawl under there and have an assistant you trust ('cause they could run you over in this process and swear they didn't know the car was in gear--in a somewhat risky move I recruit SWMBO for this) turn the steering wheel back and forth while you observe the rack.

On my '03 it was obvious that the rack was moving almost 1/4" while swinging the wheel left to right. Shortening the rack mounting brackets fixed this right up and it's been fine since.

Does anybody know if those aftermarket steering shafts improve the steering feedback at all or is it just a replacement.
I love my Mustang but the steering feedback is a joke, not to mention the center play in the wheel........

I've heard that they do, because they remove the rubber rag joint near the bottom of the shaft. but i have never invested although it should be high on my priority list.

I know flaming river makes some good ones in case you were wondering.

Did this work? I also have a 99 mustang gt with the same issue. I would prefer to buy the tube brackets but the ones listed on the site are for 02-04. I couldn't find the part anywhere, couldn't even find the 02-04 ones without the part number listed in the fix it article. So if anyone knows where I could find the tube brackets for a 99 I would really appreciate it.

They are the same. But you really do not need to buy new ones, just take them out and cut a bit off one end with a hack saw--file 'em up a bit to remove the rough edges and slap them back in.

It's easy and costs nothing.
