Default PATS IGNITION PROBLEM

I absolutely do not like the PATS system on my 96 GT. I have 3 keys, one is the original, and another keys was made a few years ago, and now I had one made a month ago. Oddly enough the original key works and the newest copy works. The key that does not work is the key I have always used in the car. I went through the sequence 4 or 5 times to get the key to work but to no avail it still doesnt work in the ignition. The dash just keeps blinking theft and the key will allow it to crank and that about it...

Has anyone else had this problem and what is a fix for this...

how are you trying to program the key? Aslong as you have two programed keys you can do it. The way i do it is turn key1 (programed key) from off to on and leave in the on position for 3 seconds. Then turn off and repeat with key2 (programed key). Then repeat step one with the unprogramed key. leave it in the on position for 3 seconds and try starting it. This has worked for me at work everytime.

thats exactly how i program the keys...its just weird that it wont keep itself programmed...I would rather disable it because I do not want to get out somewhere and have this happen to me.

96-98 only need 1 working key to program a new key. This is straight from the owner's manual for my 96 gt.

"Two electronically coded keys were supplied
with your vehicle, use one of these with the
procedure below:

1.Using a coded key that you can start your
engine with, turn the ignition from the ON to
the OFF position.

2.Within 15 seconds, insert a new key into the
ignition and turn it to ON or START. The
vehicle does not have to be started.

If the key has been coded, the theft indicator
will illuminate for two seconds. The key can
then be used to start the vehicle.

Repeat until all chosen keys have been coded
(max=16)."
or you could just disable PATS with a tuner.
