Exclamation Replacing an axle, need advice.

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be replacing my passenger axle this weekend and have a couple questions. I had the axle out when I did my gears a while back, but don't recall a few things. I know how to get the thing out, but my question is with the ABS gear that is (I think) on the axle. How do you get that thing off of the old axle and onto the new one??? I hope I don't need to go to some place with a puller and a press.

Thanks for any help.

If the new axle doesnt have it (which it probably doest) you have to CAREFULLY get the old ring off the old axle then press it onto the new axle. I dont even think you can buy those exciter rings for them anymore... Im not 100% on that though.

The "new" axle is actually a used one and it does not have the gear on it. Does anyone know if I'm going to have to find some place with a puller and a press to get this thing off, or will I be able to heat it up and get it off of there?

Do NOT heat it, it is sintered metal and will likely crack...

You need to find a machine shop with a sufficiently large press and proper backing plates so that it can be pressed off and reinstalled with red loctite...

I usually heat them up with a torch and they come right off.

If by "torch" you mean a propane or butane thingy then that's OK--"torch" to me means oxy/acetylene which would be a problem waiting to happen...

Neither have I, however I am reluctant to tell a 1st-timer/less experienced fellow to blast a sintered metal wheel with an oxy/acetylene torch.

To do it right and according to all the rules you need a hot-oil bath, or just press it off cold with an appropriate press and backing plates...
