Default Guys, I know.. starting problem

Okay, my brother's 1996 Honda Accord is having a starting problem. I know it's not a 4.6L Mustang, but I have one.. so that should be good enough to post.. right? =)

Anyway, on to the point.. the car will crank over, then turn on.. but it dies almost immediately. I pushed the throttle under the hood to try to keep the idle high, but it dies even after I push it about 2 times.. it just sputters and shuts off.

If it's any indication, I heard a kind of "poof" noise come over from the intake tube (his car is completely stock) after the engine died out. We checked the oil.. and we don't have a rubber mallot handy to slam the gas tank to test for the fuel pump's integrity. Also, if he tries to hold the key over for more than a second, the car just won't start.. the starter just keeps trying and won't start the motor. He has to briefly bring the key over for no more than a second, then it will start.. and then shut off.

I seriousely appreciate any help you guys can give me.. respectfully, I just don't want to become a member of some retarded Honda forum somewhere, it wouldn't feel right.

I joined a Honda Forum for my 2004 CRV and the moment I put my sig at the bottom and mentioned that my honda has my winter beater they either flamed me or ignored me, lol.

I doubt it's a fuel problem but check the Fuel pressure release valve to see if you have fuel pressure with the Accessory position on. If you do then it's spark or electrical related. 96 hondas don't have anti theft like we do so we can eliminate that as a cause unless, he has an after market alarm. Have you looked at or tested the ignition control relays? Pull the plugs and check the distributer (Or DIZZY as some **** on here call it, lol). The fact that you can keep it running erratic at high idle means you are compensating for the lack of firing cylinders by adding more fuel/air/spark to the other cylinders; in essence bullying the engine to run.

HAHA, there's another use for that rubber mallet, just jokin...but seriously, the solution is very simple...the first step is to go to the nearest Ford dealership...lol...!!

how many miles are on it maybe the timing belt is bad and jumped a few teeth. Just a wild guess since its poped through the intake.

There's like 70,000 on it but it has a brand new belt.. thats a good guess though. We still havent heard from the shop however.. but apparently the mechanic there just started it right up and was driving it around for like 10 minutes, completely normal..
