Default REPLACING TIE ROD???

Steering wheel squeaks when I turn the wheel left/right (it's only one, I don't remember which one) no matter where the wheels are in position. So I'm thinking its the tie rod on one side that has gone to ****.

First, it would be on the side that squeaks, right? Say I turn the wheel left and it squeaks, it would be the left one...?

Second, when I go to the parts store, do I just ask for another tie rod? I don't think I need anything else...

When you replace the Tie Rods you will need both inner and outer Tie Rod ends.

That doesn't sound like a tie rod though..

hm. What does it sound like?

It's just a squeak that lasts for the duration of the time the steering wheel is turned.

What kind of squeak? Creaky squeak or nails to chalkboard squeak.

Squeak like a high pitched squeak. It doesn't change its tone, it always sounds the same. I don't hear any other crumpling or anything when I turn the wheel. The car is a 99 and has almost 70k miles on it.

Hmmm..

check your ball joints.. see if they are greasable.. most Stangs out there you can't grease the ball joints however.. you just have to buy new ones.

The other thing it could be is a power steering pump leak.. put some LUCAS power steering pump STOP SQUEAK in it.. it comes in a white, tall bottle and they guarantee it will stop the squeak or you can bring it back and get a refund. Do that without even thinking about it next time you are in the Auto Parts store.

I just had my passenger tie rod done a few months back. I didn't do it but I believe all you need is the tie rod, thats all that the garage charged me for on my invoice, my car had the exact same symptoms yours has from what you explained so I'm sure that's what it would be.

Hah, yeah. Me and my parking garages.. you can hear all the sounds your car makes because they are amplified. Although, last night I went in a paring garage and heard nothing coming from the steering pump (confident that is what it is, too lazy to pick up Lucas)

It only happens for a second however.. and only at slow speeds.

hmmm...

I'm going to the track tomorrow. My schedule is booked later. The car has about 70k miles. Can I get away with not replacing it for a few days or so?
