Default ENGINE QUESTION

Hey everyone I'm new to mustangs, and i might have some obvious questions so bear with me.

what is the difference between a 4.6 and a 5.4? i know that the displacement is different but what differenciates the two? is it the block or the stroke or the bore or a combination of them?

thanks in advance for the info

The 5.4 has a taller deck height and longer stroke. The bore size is identical between the two.

Deck height is the distance between the crankshaft centerline and the deck surface.

The 5.4L has far more stroke than it needs, these engines you need to concetrate on maximizing the bore.

so, if i were to get an aluminum block should i get it bored out .020 or .030? would that make a difference in the pistons or just the rings? would the heads/gaskets interfere with the combustion?

A .020" 0r .030" over bore will only marginally improve cylinder head airflow, you should look into a big bore (ie. 3.700" bore size).

Headgaskets are not an issue.

BTW, the only aluminum 5.4L block made is the Ford GT and it's priced at over $3000 and requires machine work to fit in a RWD application. Not practical for almost everyone.

You can find blocks on there, but they are overpriced. Locate a local FRPP dealer, and you'll surely find a much cheaper price tag.
