SOMETIMES if your car has large headers it will sound like a "ping" under heavy throttle. My camaro and my friends corvette both did that. It might sound kind of like a slight exhaust leak.

Yeah I know this it's bad.... but if it is identical from 87 - 93 octance.. and there are no signs of the timing having been messed with, could it still likely be that it is knock ??

I've had a cheap car before that knocked BAAAAD (it was a 1980 Buick that was worthless, I let the knocking rattle away because it sounded kinda cool in high school), and this isn't nearly as bad, but it seems too happen under the same sort of throttle conditions (ie uphill, under torquing), but mostly at higher revs like 2500 +

I think I'm going to go to a mechanic on the weekend and have him test drive it and see if he can take a stab at what it is...

You know the difference between a knock or a tick? We are talking about opposite ends of the spectrum here. A common problem on the 4.6 is an exhaust leak from the collector pipe joint. Doesn't seal with a typical gasket...might want to check that out. The 4.6 is a relatively quiet engine. Ticking isn't normal...

Yeah I do know the difference between knock and tick, but... it's VERY hard to tell the difference in my car's case. If it wasn't for the fact that putting in high octane gas doesn't stop it, I'd swear it was knock.. it is a sort of hollow metallic sound that only occurs under heavy throttle and 2500+ rpms.. could this still be the exhaust leak ?? I'm really hoping it is.

Mine does the same thing. it kind of sounds like the rattle of a rattle snake. I need to get it fixed cuz its anoying the hell out of me

Really ?? K I'm sorry to hear about that but at the same time glad I'm not alone. Do you have any ideas what it is ?? Exhaust leak ?

it could certainly be an exhaust leak, especially if it's on the passenger side. With all the transmission problems my car had, my X pipe was off and on alot. Even with a new gasket, they had a really hard time getting it to seal properly the last time.

Is your car Auto/Manual?? Could it possibly be driveline related?? Just trying to think of different possibilities...

And someone mentioned that their car sounded like a rattlesnake when under heavy throttle.. That sounds like my car, and when I had a few different folks listen, they all said it was transmission related, either loose flexplate bolts, heavily worn clutch packs/bands, etc...

My car's got 126k (80% hard) miles on the car, so either a rebuild, or a replacement are in order..

My 04 Gt's got 16k on it and it's been ticking at full throttle for at least the last 6k. I haven't tried higher octane gas yet, but i can't figure out what it is..
