Default RE: Gears

I'm pursuing the idea of 4.10 gears in my '96 5spd, would the speedo gear be an option for me, or would i also need to go after some electronics?

gears can use a programmer for the install... you could also use a recalibration thing for 100 bucks.. i used my programmer to recalibrate for my gears though. i got my gears on ebay from a ford dealer for 150 bucks.
Since you have an automatic transmission, a programmer (flash tuner) will be required to correct the speedometer/odometer for the new gear ratio. The $100 device (SpeedCal) mentioned by racer02GTstang is not usable on an '01 automatic transmission as I understand it, only on manual transmissions. You'll be glad if you get a flash tuner anyway, because they really wake up an automatic-equipped Mustang.

sk8erdudex, you can't use a speedo gear in this case because it's all electronic.
Actually you can use a speedo gear I just installed my 23 tooth one today. The gear is on the back of the tranny on the drivers side about half way up on the tranny. There is one 10 mm bolt holding a black cylinder thing its about 1 inch in diameter. When you undo the bolt the cylinder slides out and the gear is on the end of it. Just take the clip off and replace the gear and your set. Takes about 10 minutes.

Do I only need a tuner to correct the speedometer and odometer? If that is the only thing that I need it for then wont it only throw the speedometer off about 3 mph? If thats the case I would just wait to get one because I dont want to spend the extra $100 right now.

If you go ahead with 4.10s, your speedometer will be off by about 25%. Your stock gears are 3.27s, and the math to figure the error is simply 4.10/3.27. For instance, if you're actually going 40 mph your speedometer will read 50, if you're actually going 60 mph your speedometer will read 75, and if you're actually going 80 mph (my favorite commuting speed) your speedometer will read 100. Your odometer will be reading high by the same percentage, racking up more miles than you actually have. The SpeedCal will only correct the speedo/odometer. A tuner will do that and much more. If you can come up with the $$$ get a tuner, because they also really wake up automatic transmissions.
