Unhappy 96' cobra spedo problem please help

hi, i recently purchased a mystic 96 cobra and like an idiot i bought the car with the spedo not working. once underneeth the car i noticed that the spedo was unpluged. i pluged it in and drove the car and my spedo is reading over 160 mph when im going about 40mph and the miles are not turning. to my knowledge the car has 355's if that makes a difference. any help would greatly be appreciated.

Welcome! ...sounds like you need to use a tuner to get the correct cal. of the rear gear for the speedo to work right...verify that you have 3.55's first...

pull the shift boot up and see if the car has a speed cal installed.

also do you know if the car has the stock transmission? if you put a 3650 in that year car it will do exactly when you are describing. It requires a special speed cal.

Funny enough the reason I know this is because I put a 3650 in a 96 Mystic I used to have and I had to get the special speed cal for it.

Okay...I think you have bigger problems than just slapping on a tuner. You said you were going 40 and its reading 160. Maybe you want to check and see if everything is connected correctly. and check the cable. If you change gears it will be off, but not that far off. Don't go spend 300 dollars on a tuner when you don't need it.

A tuner will not correct a 96-98 Cobra speedometer. You need either the correct gear on the trans/cable or the speedcal wired into the actual circuit. However I dont see this being your issue. Even with different gears installed, the speedo will only be off by ~10mph tops, not 120mph off

Sounds like a cluster issue if you ask me. You said the mileage isnt regsitering either correct?
