Default Moving the Temp Sensors.... Ox!

I found this on another board where a member used an explorer longblock in his mustang. It has the coolant temp sensor in the intake valley of the head. I want to use this.

From what I can tell by blowing into the threaded hole it does not open up to the coolant passages in the rest of the head.

How can I utilize this place for the Coolant temp sensor???

Here is a picture. (This is not my engine but I am hosting the image.)

I believe that is just taking a temp reading from the surrounding metal... I'm not sure how accurate this would be though.

Does anyone know if the Explorer PI heads have the passage opened up?

When I got my 5.4, it had a temp sensor in the valley that wasn't opened to any coolant passage... it was just doing a surrounding reading... I didn't use that method cuz I wasn't very sure of it's accuracy.

Just out of curiousity... Are you wanting to use this spot to add an aditional sensor for an aftermarket gauge, or are you interested in reading temps more towards the block?

I was lacking a coolant sensor location for my Autometer gauge, so I tapped my thermostat gooseneck, and it seems to work great.

Use 96-98 need a location for 2 temp sensors (one sensor, one sender actually) and the PI intake manifolds from the factory and after market traditionally only offer a place for one sensor. So you need to find another place to put the second one.

I have mine in the thermostat housing but it looks kinda ghetto.

I'm thinking about moving both of my sensors (96-98 have two gauge/ECU) into the valley so I can utilize the standard PI intake coolant port for the Coolant cross over mod.
