Default 28 and 31 spline limited slip's

can any of you guys fill me in as far as limited slip diff's go? i'm assuming the car's stock rear end is a 28 spline limited slip, is that right? and if so, upgrading to a 31 spline would really only be necessary if you were putting down some serious power, right?

any info would be a great help

only needed if your running a very sticky tire at the track, like slicks. The diff unit isn't the weak link, its the axles. If your on a budget and want insurance for drag radials the 28 spline hardened axles will do. If your running slicks then yea, it'd be best to upgrade to 31 spline hardened axles and a 31 spline carrier. Its not just the power, its really mostly traction. A stock mustang can break an axle launching hard on slicks, or a 500 hp car could run forever with the stock axles as long as he didn't put sticky tires on it and launch hard.

Hey MD,

I'm putting some BFG 315/35/17 DR's on my MPH Mongoosed GT Vert (376 rwhp). Am I looking for trouble with my stock rear? I'm not going to be running it at the track, but the Goodyear Eagle GT's would always break loose when I banged 2nd running around town. That's why I got the DR's (plus they look mean as hell). What do you think?

I've heard of BFG's breaking axles before, but the track is much stickier and your gonna launch harder there. For the street I doubt you'd ever have a problem... but its definately a possibility. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't upgrade unless I planned on heavy track use, but that doesnt mean you won't break something.

With rear-end troubles that relate to HP and traction (as opposed to old age or poor maint), do they usually just bBANG -or- do they give hundreds of miles worth of warning? I'm putting in my 4.10's next week. I'm only like 260RWHP. Some day I will be beyond that and get rid of these slippery Goodyears too. I'd like to mild these OEM axels until failure is immenent!
