i used to work at a sign shop. when we did lettering and graphics we always used plastic spreaders like what body shops use to put bondo on cars.

nothing like good ol glossy paint...but yes costly.

you could go to a custom sign shop and they could make custom stripes for you. you could get reflective style vinyl or gloss colors or flat colors.
