Default Should I get a 94-98 Cobra or GT?

Hi All. I'm looking to buy a used GT or Cobra from the 94-98 series. Is there a big difference in the GT vs the Cobra? They're both 4.6's right?

Any advice you have in what to look for in buying this car would be appreciated!

Right about both are 4.6. The GT is a SOHC 16V and I think 215 hp, while the cobra is a DOHC 32V with 300 hp. I'm not sure if those are exact power stats, but you get the point.

Well Im not really sure about #'s here but I think the 94-95 Cobras were slower than the 96-98 Cobras but eighter way go with the Cobra. Thats just me, maybe someone who has more knowledge in this can answer it better.

94-95 GT are 5.0

96-98 GT are 4.6SOHC

If anything get the 1998 SVT cobra. it'd be the fastest one out of the bunch, unless you go with the cobra R. .. ..

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking the '98 Cobra is the way to go. Might as well start at the top and tune/upgrade from there

Is there anything I should check for or listen for when I test drive one of these? Something that a private party seller might try to pass on me?

Just normal things.. look at brakes, air tight, (conv), noises when driving, smokes?, tread, shifts?, def run a carfax too. usually someone on here is offering to run a carfax for you. So get the VIN, and post it here, so someone can run it. I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem finding someone either.

Thanks MarcusM and Quatrocky.

I'm going to check out a black one tonight with 49,500 miles. Doesn't look like it has any mods (yet), so I might start from a clean slate.

I'll post the VIN if it looks good, thanks!

Just remember....Cobra = Premium Gas Only + added insurance premiums. The Cobra is the way to go, of course, but I just wanted you to be able to look at the big picture.

Thanks Deannostang!

I'll search the forums for the average MPG of the Cobra. I'm used to only about 14 city using premium with my IS300, hopefully it's not much worse in a Cobra!
