Default Pulleys and Cams

Hey,
I ordered and tried installing Summit brand underdrive pulleys and the crank pulley fit loose. I was pretty well thinking that the parts are simple enough to not screw up. It appears to be a sign of “you get what pay for”, but who else has some budget-conscious pulleys for the getting?

Also, for future reference, what all GOOD cams are out there for a 2003 SOHC 4.6? There will be long-tube headers, heads or big head work, stall, and gears by then and will be looking at the Comp 278 or something comparable. I’ve read that the “original” VT cams are no longer produced, but curious about the “new ones” and other options for best performance.
I appreciate your input.

Thanks,
I'll just have to pay a bit more for good pulleys.
It sounds like the Stage2 will be the way to go until a shortblock is built...maybe I'd luck out and the Stage2.5 would clear! That's down the road yet.

Their Stage 2 cam clears with only 0.005" on an engine with cam gears at 0 degrees (which is rare from Ford) so their 2.5 is definitely going to bend your intake valves.

BTW - Steeda/March or stock for pulleys. A cheap crank pulley is a good way to break your oil pump on these motors.

Thanks guys. I guess like any other mid range cam with stock pistons I'll have to check clearances. I just read on another thread that cms guarantees clearance, but better safe... So would cms be the place to go for cams or... Maybe scoring another block will be the way to go.
I had read that before about using the stack-a-pulley could cause issues. I'll either go pricey or go stock.

I ordered SUM-329703-W for 01.5-04. I think the idea of not stacking the pulleys is better, plus a couple brands point out(and some customers vouch) that they still spin the alternator fast enough to keep up at idle even with lights on.
