Default Blown Head Gasket

If you blow your head gasket, would that trigger the "check engine soon" light? Since compression would be different it goes off right?

Im sure it would cause a misfire and a few other problems so it probably would trigger the MIL. You do know that when a head gasket goes that you will be blowing white smoke out the tail pipes and possibly water over the engine depending on where its coming from.

no, i didnt know that.

But I noticed the smell of coolant and I opened my engine and saw coolant on top of the left side valve cover. The coolant hose looked fine and was securely adapted to the fitting.

I'll check a little more once I get home from work. Also, the coolant notice popped up on the instrument panel as well.

I'll do some more investigating later.

But as for now, do you know what it could be?

Coolent over time will make deposits on the spark plugs and water will sit on the pistons. This will cause the car to start rough. Yes, you will also get white smoke. You may have oil in your coolent tank and/or water in your oil.

I think my thermostat may be busted, or the coolant lines need a flush.

Because it's not actually overheating (the needle of the heat guage is staying just a little over halfway). But I can see a small coolant puddle by where the thermostat housing meets the hose.

Not to mention that the hose gets SOOOO hot. I mean, you cant touch it, same with the radiator.

What do you gusy think?

What are some other ways to determine it's the manifold? Because The only part where the coolant is coming out is right by the thermostat housing.

I have coolant leaking there too.. smelled coolant, pulled over, leaking thru the the crack where the top elbow meets the intake manifold.

Intake manifold is like $200. It looks like its fairly easy to replace.
