Default Q about the Shifter

Just curious, is it normal for the shifter to vibrate some when idling? The whole car does a tiny bit when idling as well but I figured that is probably normal with the size of the motor. Just didn't know if I should be feeling vibration in the shifter like I am?

stock shifter = crap. anything aftermarket is better than that thing. i have stock still for the time being(saving for MGW), but have been in cars with other shifters and its SOOO much better... mine does vibrate, but i dont really notice it. i was taught that, unless your shifting, never have your hand on the shifter.

Mine vibrates sometimes a tiny bit. But enough that I can look at it and notice it vibrating a really slight bit.

My stock shifter used to do that but i haven't noticed it with my MGW,the MGW is the best shifter i have ever used,i still have my Steeda TRI-AX and would never go back,i also have driven cars with a Hurst shifter.

that was my suspicion, guess I need to save up for a shifter! So the MGW is a good one? Any others that are relatively inexpensive but good quality? (I know those 2 words dont usually go in the same sentence but hey...can't hurt to ask)

Pro 5.0, Steeda Tri-ax, MGW and Hurst. Most people are probably Tri-ax and MGW.

I have a Steeda Tri-Ax, and love it over the stocker, but with as much as I've heard about the MGW I would really like to try that one out sometime. The Steeda is doing me fine for now thought :P

And my shifter does vibrate enough to notice as well. And +1 to never having you hand on the shifter unless your shifting, gotta take those corners the best you can :P.

If all one had ever driven were FWD manual transmission and slushboxes, I can see how it might be disconcerting--however it is quite normal and part of the "package"

In our cars the shifter is mounted directly on the transmission, not to the chassis and connetced the the tranny via rods or cables (as in the '05+ Mustangs and all FWD cars). This is very common in sports cars (the Mustang shifter is remarkably similar to that used in the Miata) and providers a much more precise shift motion and feel than a link or cable operated shifter.

Since the engine and transmission are mounted to the chassis through rubber dampeners at the motor mounts, and the transmission crossmember--any motion of the engine/transmission (vibration, torque reaction, etc.) will be felt in the shift lever.
