Default Starting problem?

I went out to start the mustang on friday and all i got was a click. I thought it was the battery so i had it tested, it was good but just need to be charge, so i put it in the car and tried agian. Some story thought it was the starter, but however this is what i noticed it is actually doing. It would appear that even when turn the car on it makes the battery voltage to to zero. Does that sound like the starter or could it be someting else?

sounds like your battery is toast.

well thats what i was thinking... but as soon as its disconected from the car it returns to 12.25 volts. So i'm kinda leaning away from that and maybe a soleniod or starter connection? I haven't had time to check anything really yet. I'm just wonder where to go from now.

did you check to see if your battery connections had acid build up. if so that could be a cause of a bad connection. its an easy fix...just clean it and youre good.

Did you test the battery under load? Worst case, take it to Autozone or similar and have them throw it on their tester.
But I have to agree that it sounds like the battery is a goner.

That's what I was going to say. You can have 12 volts but, under a LOAD it will drop enough to keep the car from cranking.

sounds like a broken starter or there is a short somewhere. when you get a chance jack the car up and bang the starter with a hammer or something to see if that jiggles the gears loose. if that works then u have ur anwser.

Yeah, the battery tested to have 12.28 volts and 422 amps outa 530 before i charged it. The terminals are good on the battery and a quick visual of the starter connection look clean too, but i haven't had a chance to do anything else. School kinda comes before play... haha. It just seams strange that the voltage drops to nothing when ingnition is on or in acc.

check your grounds before you assume its the starter. also i would take the starter to autozone/adv auto first - they can check it, for free.

im having same problem right now. but i kno its my battery cables, they are junk. basically when i want ta start the car i gotta jiggle everything around before turning the key. im in the process of finding some good 0 gauge wire to upgrade the whole setup.

i had this same problem before, but it was my engine -> chassis ground that was coming loose (driver side engine mount)

if its your cables, look into replacing the "big 3" (do a search, it will tell you more) which is basically all your grounds.

load test the battery, tap on starter, check wires. then if all else fails - pull starter have autozone check it. if you dont find anything, check wires again.
