Default 95 GT Computer Problems???

Hello all, my son and i are new members to the forum and have just finished rebuilding the top end of our 95 GT convertible. The car had 103,000 miles on it and we have owned and babied it since brand new. The mods we installed are as follows:

1. SVO ceramic coated shorty headers, Bassani 2.5" SS x/pipe w/ hi-flow cats, SS Bassani mufflers and SS 2.5" Bassani xhaust w/ 3" tips
2. Trickflow twisted wedge heads, 1.6 roller rockers, new timing chain, E303 cam, BBK underdrive pulleys
3. SVO upper/lower 95 cobra intake (GT 40 size runners and plenum), K&N filter charger, 65mm BBK TB, 70mm MAS
4. Koni rear shocks and front struts, Koni 1.75" lowering springs, chrome caster camber plates 17x10 chrome Cobra R wheels

After installing the above, the car has difficulty finding an idle when started warm. On cold start it fires right up and idles nicely. The check engine light comes on after 2 mins of operation and we are unable to make any real timing adjustments. The car is sluggish from a stop but once it gets the rpm above 2000 it really starts kicking in. I have heard that 95's computers are not ideal for my new set up.....any suggestions on idle problems and getting more snap to the rear wheels is greatly appreciated.

It might be the O2 sensors. Or quite possibly a vacuum leak. Are all gaskets sealed tight, and hoses hooked up? That's where I would start to look.

Yes, bad O2 sensors can cause alot of problems. Did you disconnect the battery when you all this work was done? You should for at least 10 minutes if you haven't already. This will zero out the computer and allow it to reprogram itself much faster to compensate for all your new parts. Otherwise it may take up to two weeks to get the new computer settings ironed out. Engine surging is one tell tale sign the computer is trying to readjust itself to compensate for your new parts. Try it, it can't hurt a thing and may help to solve at least some of your problems.

One other thing. Go to http://www.corral.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=308 as this is a forum dedicated to computer questions only. Good overall site too..... www.corral.net

Good luck!

Definitely reset the computer. If/when the check engine light comes on, have a code scanner handy. 95/96 was the first year Mustang went OBDII compliant and if you're lucky, it will be.

Since you idle fine when cold (closed loop) and only have problems after running for two minutes (warmed up and in Open loop) then it could be MAF related or O2 related. Those two readings are ignored when the car first starts up.

To check for leaks around the intake plenum and CAI. After the car is warmed up (not hot) proprane sprayed around the base of the plenum or intake will help locate any leaks in the intake gaskets. If the propane gets sucked into the engine it will smooth the idle out. You can also use starter fluid for this.

Last but not least but most certainly overlooked on occasion, wiring. Make sure the MAF sensor is plugged in and all your wiring is nice and snug.
