Default What path should i take to get more HP?

Hey guys,

I have give or take 600 bucks to put into my 01 mustang GT, i was wondering what path i should take on my car to get more HP...I don't have the time or money to get it supercharged, so i was wondering if an x-pipe or headers are the way to go or what....just shoot me your ideas, im open to everything. the 600 just includes parts, so if you could just round it out on how much im looking at for labor thatd be helpful, but whatever...thanks a lot everyone

what mods do you already have? for $600, i'd go with some gears. you won't gain any HP, but your car will definitely be faster.

when im looking at the gears, and the two options pop up, do i need to select something out of em or do i just buy them in general, and what are 3:90's, and 40series flows?

3.90's are gears (which i have) and 40 series flows are a 2 chambered muffler by Flowmaster. Gears help you get to and through your power band faster (thus making you move faster) and performance mufflers (exhaust in general) make your car louder, and help to add horsepower by freeing up restrictions in exhaust flow.

You definitely sound like a total newbie (no offense...i'm just saying) so feel free to use the search button on here to further help you learn, and answer your questions.

Open up the exhaust, 2-1/2" mid-pipe (catted or not, other than noise level it makes no significant difference) and then a 93 octane tune or better yet buy a tuner...

by "newbie" i think he meant that you don't seem to know a whole lot about cars, not that you just bought the car. i don't know which "options" you're seeing on american muscle, but it's probably asking what gear ratio you want. popular choices are 3.73 and 4.10, or you can go in between with the 3.90 gears.

call around to some local shops and get quotes on labor to install the rear end gears, you'll hear all kinds of prices on here but it really depends on the shops in your area. but you shouldn't pay more than maybe $500 for parts + labor to have gears installed (probably cheaper). dollar-for-dollar, this will make your car go faster than any of the cheaper bolt-ons.

or if you want, for not a whole lot more you can throw a shot of nitrous on that thing.

Gears are the ring and pinion gears in the rear end. 3.73, 3.90, and 4.10 are gear ratios. The stock gear ratio is 3.27 meaning that the drive shaft turns 3.27 times for every revolution of the tire. 4.10s mean that the drive shaft turns 4.10 times for every revolution of the tire. At any given speed the tachometer will read 25% higher with 4.10s than with stock gears. This allows your motor to get into its power faster.

If you want to simulate the effect of a lower gear ratio like 4.10s put car in first, ease up to 25 mph and floor it. Now put your car in second at 25 mph and floor it. You can feel the difference. First has a lower gear ratio than second. You can get a similar effect for all gears by changing the gear ratio in the rear end.
