Default overheating problem

I've been having an ongoing heating problem on my 2000 GT. When I drive in stop and go traffic, or just do a lot of city driving on a hot day my car overheats and dies. I'm assuming its overheating, but the temp gauge never gets past the half way point. I've done some searching and can't seem to find any helpful info. Any help would be appreciated.

Default not overheating

Its not overheating.

How long does it take to start back up?

I'm no expert but it sounds like some component is getting hot.

Especially if it takes like 10 mins or less to start back up.

yeah, it only takes a few minutes before it will start back up. After it's died from overheating, the temp gauge won't even register for a couple minutes, as soon as it does, the car will start again.

Hmmm a good coolant flush and fresh coolant with a new thremostat never hurts, maybe even a 5-10* cooler thermostat. Maybe inspect your water pump and see if it looks shot too. If you do replace the pump I recomend the flush and thermostat anyway.

Ive heard the temp gauges dont work too well sometimes too. I have a problem with bad fuel around here sometimes and my fuel filter can get pretty clogged. I think people have had similar problems with the IAC doing the same thing too.

It doesnt sound like you're engine is overheating, if it was theres a good chance that would register with the guage and possibly blow the cap on the resovior. It sounds like an electrical component is getting to hot. Are you getting an trouble codes?

good point! When my car was overheating due to my fan not benig on, the cap was already popping off and alittle smoke was coming out of the hood.

sorry for abandoning my post, I've been away. It's been happening more frequently now. Its really bad when its hot out and I sit in stop and go traffic. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm moving or stopped, it will die anyways. Like I said earlier, if I wait a few minutes the temp gauge will come back on and the car will start, but only for a few minutes, then it dies again.
