so I was just messing around with it a bit and I have a questioin. If your engine gets hot, does your fan stay on even if you take the keys out? I could have sworn it used to do that, but it doesn't now. The fan only comes on when I have the accessories turned on. Also, I'm not positive, but I don't think the fan turned on until the car overheated and stalled. Any help?????

ok...more news...its been sitting in the shade for over two hours now. I just went back down to see if I could restart it and the temp gauge won't register and the fan turns on when I turn on the accessories. Is there a temp sensor in the fan that might be faulty?

If I remember correctly the fan should stay running for a bit after its off, if its hot. Also there Im not sure if there is a sensor on the fan or not, I dont believe so but dont quote me on that. I think the temp sensor sits up by the thermostat housing. But there may be one by the fan as well, sorry its early and I cant remember off the top my head. If I get a chance here later I'll check into it. Also It wouldn't hurt to clean your TPS and maybe MAF sensor as well. And check all fuses etc. for the hell of it, are you getting any code/lights?

If it only happens while your sitting idle, check your cooling fan to make sure it is coming on or not.

It has happened at idle and when I'm driving. What controls when the fan comes on and turns off? Also, does anyone know where the fan relay is located? Its a $6 part so I figured it would be worth a shot to replace it and see if I get any results.

Definitely sounds like a electrical problem. I had an old pickup truck that used to do the same thing. drove me crazy. For me it ended up being the ignition module overheating. when it got hot it would overheat truck would die.Let it cool down then it would start back up and run fine. I would start looking for a bad electrical component just like uberstang1 said

Replace the temp sensor, they are cheap and could be your problem. If not, check:
1. check and make sure the fan is coming on everytime it's supposed to. It's common for our fans to blow the plugs. Check the connector that plugs into your fan and see if it has any burn marks.
2. Check for leaks around the intake manifold.
3. If/when it overheated did it spill out the cap? if so, did you refill the coolant properly by burping the coolant system?
