i'm upgrading my 28 spline 8.8 to 31 spline. when i put the gears in, could i use the same amount of shims? or will there be a difference with the 31 spline differential? it's a ford racing differential. thanx in advance!

No. You'll have to reset the backlash on the gears if the carrier is replaced and will need a different amount of shims.

Its not hard at all. You can order an install kit which includes shims for $35 on American Muscle. The only special tool you need is a dial indicator to measure the backlash and you should be set.

i have all of the tools. just the first time i've messed with rearends. did everything else on my car myself, but the when i paid a shop last time to originally install my 3.90's they screwed it up and charged me double to fix it the right way, so i'm just gonna build the whole thing myself. i found some nice walkthroughs with pictures and stuff. can't mess it up any more than they guys at the local shops. plus with all the money i have into my baby, i get nervous leaving it at shops and knowing other people are messing with it.
