Default 96 will turn over but not start. help please

ok my friend just bought a 96 gt and the day after he got it it will turn over but not start so he said it was the fuel pump so he replaced that but it didn't do anything so after that we put the battery from my 95 gt into his because he took his to advanced to test it and it started oozing but they said it was good. after changing the battery and trying to jump it because apparently my perfectly fine battery was dead he thought it might be the fuel pump relay fuse so i took it out of my 95 and we put it in his. while i tried to start it he was spraying starting fluid in the throttle body and it started twice for about 5 seconds then it slowly died. so now we aren;t sure what the problem could be can anyone help us out? thanks

i talked to a few guys at work and some think it could be the fuel filter but we haven't checked that yet

Fuel filter is a good place to start, and not real expensive. Is the pump kicking on when you turn the key?

we know for a fact it kicked on once and that was it. the fuel pump is brand new but who knows it could be bad

edit: not sure if its kicked on more than once

Try resetting the inertia switch in the trunk. Driver side I believe.

Looks like this

the red button should be somewhat down and when you push it, it should feel like its bottomed out. If you push it and it clicks down, then that was the problem.

Fuel air and spark. That's all it needs to run (unless something electrical is messed up), so check the fuel first, then make sure it's getting air and spark.

my friend checked for spark and its getting that but fuel isn't getting in. we still haven't figured out why. something i forgot to mention is that when he bought it the check engine light was on (idk why he bought a car with the check engine light on) and he drove it home that night (approx 1hr) then next morning he drove it and got breakfast for his wife and later when he tried to start it it wouldn't start

Do you have a way to check the fuel pressure at the rails? If the pump is good the only other thing I could think of is PCM related, ie-the injectors are not firing....
