Default UDP Questions

I'm tempted to get a UDP set for my car, but I'm concerned about a few things.

1.) Will my A/C not blow as cold anymore?

2.) Will my alternator not charge as well as before? My car has the Mach 1000 sound system with the amps and all.

3.) I'm somewhat concerned about messing up the balance of something and toasting my motor. What are the chances of that?

4.) Also, any special tools required? I did it on my previous car and it was very easy.

your best bet is to call the company that you're purchasing the udp from and explain your concerns. i woulnt think you would have any trouble but im not 100% sure

I think UDP's touch all your concers mildly. Weather or not its something you will notice no idea. You need a tool to help you pull the crank pulley off I think. I wouldn't mess with it, but its your car. people seem to like them. make sure you buy them from a know company and dont go for the cheap ones.

i wouldnt do it if i were you. your concerns are all valid, and those are known side effects of UDPs. you can expect about a measely 5 horsepower gain from them, but your car may run like crap. with a mach 1000 and ac on max, your car may not even want to idle and your AC and electrical system may struggle a bit until you get moving. some cars there isnt much change, others there are tho. my car HATED udp's so i pulled them off. won't ever put them on again.

I have had UDPs from two companies on my 04 GT - BBK and Steeda. BBK came and went in the same week. I cannot recommend the piggy-back style aluminum UDPs. They work fine for most folks, but mine caused a minor vibration and threw a mis-fire code quite often. I replaced them with the Steel Steeda UDPs. Much gooder, lol.

1) My A/C is working fine. Cold air every time and it has never been serviced beyond normal checks.

2) I only have the Mach 460 and it's fine. Most I've spoken with say that unless you're running a lot of aftermarket, high-power equipment, you will not have an issue. I kept the Ford battery for six years, so I'm thinking the charging was just fine.

3) No balance issues once I put Steeda UDPs on.

4) I did a write up on installing UDPs. It's still in the how-to section. The fun part was the alternator pulley, but I explained how I did that in the write up.

Good luck.

I have been running Steeda's UDPs for over a year and have had NO issues with the AC or battery charging, nor do I have any concerns re: the harmonic balancer--Steeda has a class act (mostly) and their crank pulley is very well machined and assembled.

One last comment, UDPs do "add" power so if that's what you're looking for look elsewhere--what they do is free up power by reducing the speed, and therefore parasitic load, of the various accessories. It's not a "OMG-WTF" change, however it is noticeable and is one of those things that makes for a happier engine.

It is of course most noticeable at higher rpms where the accessories would be consuming the most power--if you are not the sort to wind out your engine (4.5k+) regularly then don't bother as you will not gain anything.

I wind my car out often, and I've had UDPs before on other cars and liked them. Was just curious as to how they were on these Mustangs.
