Default 2004 Gt Battery/Alt problems

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any help to give.

about 6 months ago, my alternator wasn't running enough amps or volts, one of them, to charge the battery correctly, I had it rebuilt and all was good until yesterday afternoon.

I cranked the car ( It cranked fine) and i noticed whenever I hit the brakes, the odometer and radio lights would dim completely. When I got home, i popped the hood to check the connections to the battery and the ground wires, they all look okay. When I tried to repeat the dimming by pressing the brakes, after a few repetitions something under my dash was smoking, I immediately turned the car off, but curiosity tempted me to turn it back on just to see if I could do it again, and It did not continue to smoke.

This morning, the car would not crank. Any chance of a diagnosis?

Edit: I broke down and took it to my local mechanic who specializes in electrical stuff like this. I'm probably going to get him to replace the alternator. Anything else I should get him to look at?

What if anything is running off the ignition? Radio? aftermarket car alarm? or any other gizmoz? My guess would be grounding or shorting out

Check the engine ground wire that is on the block just aft of the oil filter adapter plate--this seems to be an issue on some GTs...
