Pulling tranny
k so how many bolts are holding the transmission in and if you leave the starter bolted in should you still be able to move the transmisson somewhat out of is the starter holding it in to.
I don't remember for sure, but I think there are 6 trans bolts. The starter bolts to the trans, so if you unhook the wires I don't see why couldn't pull the starter/trans out together.
The starter has to come out as it's body and drive are "behind" and overlap the flywheel--you'll never get the transmission out with it mounted.
There are two bolts at the bottom holding the sheet metal dust shield, and five around the bell-housing.

You are not stating what vehicle you are pulling the trans from. Your avatar shows you have a 2000 mustang under your name and a 2004 GT as your vehicle.
I don't have experience with the 2004 GT, which would have a T-3650 trans. But I do, if you are asking about a 2000 GT with a T-45 trans.
There are 2 bolts on the top of the bellhousing, 3 bolts on the driver's side and 2 bolts on the passenger side facing the rear of the car. Then, as cliffyk posted, there are 2 short bolts on the bottom holding the dust shield, facing the front of the car.
There are 3 starter bolts, also.
