Okay, here's the deal.

I've been noticing my Mustang runs a little funny when it's cold outside. Further investigation has revealed that the temperature sensor on my motor has NO pigtail, and is wired to an aftermarket temperature gauge. The computer is completely bypassed, so my car doesn't know what temperature it is. The wire to the computer was just cut off and tucked away beside the temperature sensor.

What I want to know is if I can wire the computer wire straight to the sensor, or is it unsafe and do I need to wait until I get a pigtail? (I'm gonna get a pigtail anyways, just want to know if I can use this as a temporary "Better than nothing" fix). It's hard to fit a trip to the Ford dealership in my schedule since they operate only on weekdays here.

Also as a side note, I do have a 2004 motor and it's running on a 1998 computer. This motor has 1 temperature sensor, whereas the 1998 had 2 temperature sensors

your running a 1998 computer. but your 2004 intake manifold has only one provision for a temperature sender. i believe that the 1996-1998 2v engines had two coolant temp sensors on the intake manifold. one was for the gauges and one was for the computer. from 1999-2004 there was only one sender which sent a signal to the computer which then relayed it to the gauges. i would think that you would want to drill and tap a second hole for an additional sending unit.

 

Yea, wire two sensors up if your using a 96-98 computer.
