Default Burning Oil Like a Chemistry Experiment

I have quite the problem on my hands. My car is burning oil or leaking not too sure I haven't been able to get under it and check. But I just had to fill it up with five quarts of oil today after driving it. The engine wasn't knocking, I just noticed the oil pressure gauge going to zero then pegging when I got into it some. Any ideas on what this could be??? I think maybe the oil cooler could be leaking but like I said it's weird the engine wasn't knocking with it being 5 quarts short of oil. Anything will help thanks. Also their is no puddle from where the car sits which makes me think it is either burning oil badly or leaking when I drive.

how many miles on the car? Your piston rings might be toast

Approximately 85k. I ran a compression test and everything checked out.

if its burning that much when u drive u should have huge clouds of blue smoke comming out of ur exhaust. plus with the compression check being ok that makes burning oil look a little more unlikely. you probably just have a huge leak. id get under the car and see if you can spot something.

If the car took 5 quarts the leak would have to be big enough to see rather large oil puddles under the car when you move it.

yes but to lose 5 quarts of oil is a big *** leak that aint a pinhole. theres a possibility that he blew a seal or something when he was out driving and literally lost all his oil in minutes.

i just cant believe it would be burning oil that bad and he not know it. everyone in a 5 mile radius knows when theres a car on the road burning oil. smells like **** and theres huge puffs of smoke at the stoplight when the car takes off lol.

It's really weird, I drove the car today 100 miles no major major leak. I got no idea what's going on. I'm gonna try to get up under the car today if I have the time. I'm guessing a seal is bad or the oil pan is leaking terribly when I'm driving.

Do you change your oil on a regular basis? If you were down 5 quarts thats alot, but if it was over the course of a year or 20k miles (yes some people change their oil rarley or never) the actually leak may not be that bad.
