Default engine rebuild newby

Im looking to just do a comlete rebuild. I already know that if i want a better faster car to just buy a cobra or mach 1. im just looking to get maybe 400hp eventually. right now i think im gunna go with the pi heads and stage 2 cams with new injectors since i have the 96. but for the bottom end is where i run into trouble i do not know much about that section. im guessing i should start with knowing all the factory specs wich idk if someone does please tell. but i am open for any ideas if the pi swap is not a good idea im open for something new.

you will never hit 400 with a na motor. f/i or spray it to reach the 400 mark. the pi heads will help a little, but since they will be out of the car, get them ported and get a set of custom grind cams. this should be in the ballpark of 300-325 rwhp. does your motor need a rebuild? if it does, then a built short block too
