Thanks

Well... Id start out small and build your way up if i were you. Get some heads or maybe cams. Are you planning on installing it yourself or getting a shop to do it? I wouldnt do TOOO much to the top end without doing the bottom end a little. But heads and cams should be fine. Headers, cams, heads, intake, and a tune should get you more than enough power. But get someone who knows what their doing to tune it.

I guess it would boil down to how much power you want to make, and the ultimate goals for the car. For $2000 you could do nitrous, or possibly a blower if you're lucky, and max out the stock setup. If you want more power yet you will need to beef up the internals. If just doing a basic HCI setup alone, It's not mandatory to have a forged setup or anything.

My son has an 02 GT that suffered the fabled spark plug blowing out of the head. He was stationed at Ft Hood at the time and there was no way practical way to get the car back for us to work on it.
He took it in to a local 'stang shop and came out with patriot stage II's and Comp Cam 270's. He drove the car about 3k miles (knowing not to spin the stock bottom end hard) and crushed a couple of rod bearings do to overly aggressive timing set by a local tuner. He then had the bottom end rebuilt with a good set of rods and pistons (pistons where same compression etc as stock). He got about 5k miles on that setup and had a few pistons kiss a few valves. Needless to say lots of damage and right now the engine is sucking up space in the back of my garage/shop.
My personal suggestion (based on working on cars since 1972) would be to stand pat on the money until you can do a complete engine at once. If you do it right you don't have to do it a second time or a third time. Doing things in steps is a good way to go with some things on a car like adding simple bolt-ons. For the engine, save your money and do it all at once, all matched and be happy.
