What would cause my stock 01 GT fuel pump to keep failing?
Today, my 01 GT daily driver left me stranded once again. It's back at the Ford dealer.
1st fuel pump: Had a new fuel pump installed on Oct 28th, 2010 @86K miles.
2nd fuel pump: Had a second fuel pump installed on March 3rd, 2011 @89K miles.
Today, same symptoms, expect a 3rd pump. It's about 90,400 miles.
All installed at a Ford dealer. All stock engine as it is my daily driver.
What could be causing these failures? Isn't the pump fused?
Any ideas would be welcomed. I expect to get a call from the Ford dealer sometime tomorrow with thier "latest" diagnosis.
Thanks!

1 plugged fuel filter making the pump work hard and burn out
2 fuel level kept at 1/4 or below habitually causing pump to overheat(the fuel in the tank cools the pump, when kept low for long periods of time the pump runs hotter)
3 the dealer isnt diagnosing it properly and the fuel pump isnt the issue.
the good news is that at least the pump is covered under the 12 month 12k mile warranty for ford parts installed at your dealer( if thats what the problem is)

^+1, plus; have they determined the failure mode of the pumps?
Has anyone monitored the fuel pressure? A bad fuel rail pressure sensor, bad fuel pump driver module, crimped delivery line or anything else that restricts the fuel flow could burn out the pump.
Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results, is the definition of insanity--find someone who can properly diagnose the problem-just because you have been bringing it to the dealer does not automatically mean they know what they are doing...

Update & current status: My car was towed in Monday night, I just callend them for an update.
They said that Ford has identified a batch of "bad" fuel pumps that are known to burn out prematurely. Since the dealerships (at leat this one) don't record the date codes of spare parts used in thier service operations, they have no idea which cars have had one of those "known bad" pumps installed during service.
They have a range of date codes to work from, so the challenge now is to secure a "good" pump to replace mine. They have two cars in the shop now waiting for pumps, mine is one of them, as they are on backorder from Ford (or Motorcraft). Could be a couple of days, they don't have a firm comitment on a delivery date.
Ford has apparently committed to pay for the repairs. Just for good measure, I'm going to have them throw in a new fuel filter during the repair process, even though it's not that old.
So.....that is how things stand right now.
