Exclamation Overheating Problem help!

ok so today in joliet, IL it was a scorching 91 degrees and i took the stang out drove it about 10 miles back and forth to the parents house and when i had it idling for about 5 minutes it started to overheat and all this smoke came out from under the hood, i couldn't find any coolant on the hoses just like dry water spots, we checked the coolant and there wasn't much in there so we added some 50/50 coolant and tried it again, still smoking, and i really couldn't find the leak, i can't remember if the radiator hose was hot or not but i believe it was so i dont know if the thermostat was bad or not, i checked the water pump but there was no coolant leaking out of the top of it or underneath it, there was no real fluid leaking only when it intially started when the smoke was coming out from under the hood, im going to get a new radiator cap tomorrow and then if that doesn't help ill try and replace the thermostat and then if nothing there im stumped any help would be appreciated thanks guys!

Id check it while its running for the source of the smoke, there must be a coolant leak somewhere.

there seems to be a clog somewhere in your coolant system. For me it was the radiator. I also had a minute crack in the intake. Disconnect the hoses from the radiator and pour water and see if there is a steady stream or if its restricted in any way.

If it was quite low on coolant then the temperature sensor will be no longer immersed in coolant and obviously can no longer report the coolant temperature--how often do you check the coolant level?

Beats the crap out some of the alternatives--head gasket, heater core, cracked block, etc...
