Default cam install problems

decided finally that this weekend was the weekend im putting in my MHS cams in. everything came apart fine and even to my amazment everything as far as the cams and chains went togeather well. the problem i ran into was this..... i am using the trickflow crank gears the problem that i didnt know, was you cant use the spacer with the crank gears if you have the thick reluctor/crank trigger wheel. so needless to say i cracked my timing cover. the timing cover was not that expensive but its the frustration of knowing how close i was to finishing. i read through nicks instructions and noticed it does infact say to not use the crank gear spacer if your using the thicker reluctor wheel . o well guess i have to wait to finish next weekend. just wanted to put this out there so no one makes the same mistake i did today. anyone have this happen to them? Also does anyone know where the cheapest place to get one of these thin reluctor wheels? thanks

Thank god my buddy knew what he was doing with the TFS crank gears, because they confused the hell out of me. Actually when we did mine they had not been out on the market for too long yet, so there was hardly any user feedback and what whatnot. It was a learning experience to say the least.

Good luck man, and keep us posted.

MHS used to sell the thin stamped timing wheel. but their parts page is closed
i looked through rockauto.com too, they dont seem to have any, but i only looked for 03 models, not sure if maybe it might be listed under another vehicle with the 4.6 or what...

i know alot of guys that decide to use the EDIS8 from older stangs for use with a megasquirt, like to grab the stamped trigge wheels too.

Yea I guess im going to have to go through ford for the wheel. Apparently you can use the larger wheel if you don't use the gear spacer. But I don't like the idea for the reason the gears don't sit exactly like the stock ones and the chains seem to close in my opinion

IIRC the cast wheel was prone to cracking too.

if you cant find one at a ford stealership, see if you can get one off ebay. i used to see them all the time. maybe check your local junkyards, other 4.6 modulars had the same wheel if im not mistaken. hell, i wonder if 5.4's had them too?

edit: i've lost faith in most stealerships in actually having the parts i need. i'm batting a 0 avg with them. last part i needed was a GT500 crank pulley bolt. none had it within a 500 mile radius. sweetness. btw - thats one freakin expensive *** bolt too...

I will be adding that crank trigger wheel to the cams page shortly.

The parts page might not come back, just too much work for too little cashola.
