Default 2001 GT, uses a lot of oil.

My 2001 GT that I bought a few months ago seems to use a lot of oil, about a quart every 1000 miles. I see this a lot on high mileage vehicles but mine supposedly only has 52k, I bought it with 46k. I check the oil every 1k miles and it is always down about a quart. It doesn't leak any oil at all. I use Mobil 1 as I do in all my vehicles. I do drive it hard consistently. Just curious if this is common on the 4.6s.

Check that the PCV valve is functioning properly, a compression check (dry and wet) is also indicated when oil consumption is high.

You may also want to try using a heavier weight oil, especially if you are running 5W-20, which I never use here in Florida (I run 10W-40 in the my '03 GT and 20W-50 in my bike).

Where are you in Massachusetts? I lived in Plymouth and Osterville for 45 of my years, moved down here in '93...

I will check the PCV tomorrow and I will check compression within the next week when I change out the plugs. I figured if it had a week cylinder it would throw a missfire code. As for oil I used what ever viscosity Ford specified can't remember if I used 5 20 or 5 30.

I live in Brockton, Mass, not too far from Plymouth.

I am quite familiar with Brockton, I did some work for an engineering firm in Stoughton many years ago and Brockton was between there and Plymouth--also way back when Brockton was where you have to go to get any where near a discount department store--there was Giant Store, and a Bradleys on the east side.

Pull a plug and see if a cylinder is eating oil. as well.
