Default Trunk Door Hydraulic Lifters

I'm looking for some other opinions on how the hydraulic lifters for the trunk are supposed to work. Since I got my Mustang used I'm not really sure if the operation I'm seeing is normal or not. Basically the lifters don't really lift the trunk door up. I actually have to kind of fight them when opening the trunk door all the way vertical.

Is this normal or are my lifters in need of replacement? Do they require lubrication or is that a no-no for the hydraulic lifters? Any thoughts are appreciated.
