Default Fearing The Gear

Okay guys, I'm getting ready to do gears and a tune. I've got to admit, I'm having some serious second thoughts about getting 4.10s. She is my daily driver, and though I don't have too long of a commute I'm still worried about my mpg's shooting through the roof. I'm not worried about mpg's in general, but running at almost 3K RPMs @ 70 mph seems like it would down-right suck down the gas while making the engine work harder everyday on my commute.

Is there anyone on here that has the 4.10s who commutes about 2 hrs a day? I'm just getting started modding my gt and I want to do it right, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot. I know everyone says "don't fear the gear" but...she's my dd and I plan on it being that way for awhile. Any input? Maybe should I lean toward 3.73s?

I commuted a 1 1\2 one way with 4:10s in my GT.
Don't fear 4:10s and get 3:73s.
You will regrets it in the long run.

BTW .its around 2600-2700 rpms for 70MPH with a 5-speed (T45) that is no threat for these motors spinning those rpms.
Are you Auto or 5-Speed ? either way 4:10s are great for both IMO..I want 4:30s in my Cobra this spring

You could always try 3:90s
DONT FEAR THE GEAR !!!

wishida, we both live in cali we both have 2000 gt's that look exactly the same (when mine was stock) i also drive about 2h/day, anyways i just bought 3.73's and had them installed about a week ago, they are great, around 75mph you will be at about 2450 rpm's in 5th, in my opinion 4.10's would be just wayyy too much for a daily driven car, the 3.73's will throw you back in your seat hard! love em and highly suggest them

(keep in mind i'm an 18 year old kid, shouldn't i be all about the 4.10's?)

quick question, how many miles does your car have?

Whether or not you change rear-end gears is up to you. Lower (numerically higher) gears will allow the car to accelerate faster at the cost of have to shift more often and a loss of fuel economy that depends greatly on your driving style and where you drive.

You will gain no HP from changing to lower ratio rear-end gears, what they do is provide higher torque multiplication to the wheels = faster acceleration...

Your driving habits will have a larger impact on your fuel mileage than gear selection.

All else being equal, I would suggest 3.90 gears and be done with it. It is a great compromise for those debating between the 3.73 and 4.10 ratios. I have had 3.27, 3.73, 3.90 and 4.10 gears in my Bullitt so I have experience to base my opinion on. If the car is mostly driven on the street as a DD, I would not go with 4.10, but that is just me.

You will love the gears no matter which you chose.
GOOD LUCK with whatever you decide to do!!!

keep in mind any long term plans, if you stay N/A, i'd say 4.10, if you plan on a supercharger, 3.73. turbo - stay stock 3.27.

4.10's in my DD for about 5 years now. you'll shoot yourself in the foot if you do 3.73's bc you'll wants 4.10's later. my .02cents.

Thanks for the responses guys.

@repzard: It's a 5 speed
@Hadz: She's only got 58K miles
@cliffy: Thanks buddy, I know the gears don't actually add any horses, but I understand they sure feel like they do!

I'm definitely going to stay N/A, and no nitrous. At this point I suppose I'm leaning toward 3.73s. I really don't want to be kicking myself either way. Guess it's just a tough decision I'm going to have to make.
