Hello. My 1998 Mustang GT Conv. 4.6 L 2V recently died after pulling out of a gas station. It has 93000 miles.

2 days before it died, it felt like there was a very small flat spot at about 2500 rpm, but I didn't think anything of it; felt very minor.

3 hours before it died, I noticed a slight whining noise coming from the car, that changed pitch with the engine RPM's. Again, thought nothing of it.

Then, after sitting for 5 minutes without running, I started her and tried to back up, but she started dying and thrashed around at 200 RPM. I turned it off, and tried to start it again, but it kept at about 200-300 RPM with a very rough idle. Now it won't start at all!

Any clues on how to diagnose the problem? Could it be the fuel pump?

Sounds like your timing chain might be worn out. Not completely sure about that.

Check your fuel pump.

+1 to checking fuel pump. Every pump that has failed on me, has always been right after I got gas.

It's the fuel pump. The whining just before it died is a dead giveaway.
