Loose drive shaft problem

Default Loose drive shaft problem

I went to the mechanic the other day and he told me my driveshaft was loose. I've got a 5 speed 04 gt. The tranny is leaking from the main shaft seal a little bit too(little drips when the cars off) and I think he told me the diff was leaking as well.

The mechanic told me something about a bad pinion seal or something like that? I can't remember and I wanna take it to a local friend to fix it but I want to tell him the right thing thats wrong with it.

Also when I drive, i get that whine noise from the rear end and then recently when i let off the gas and have it in gear, it kinda of like stutters while slowing down and you can hear the whinning kind of go in and out, so is that the driveshaft or maybe low tranny fluid? I've been refilling it every couple months so i'm not sure whats up.

if anything comes loose or moved around, it can angle your pinion gear so that its not allinged properly with the ring gear and make those sounds. i don't know how to tighten up the drive shaft or if you can unless we are talking about the universal joints but sounds legitiment

Sounds like low diff fluid, not tranny fluid. The pinion seal is pretty easy, just replaced mine. Just make sure you torque the pinion nut to 150lbs to crush the crush sleeve and you should have no worries.

Just got back from the mechanic and told me the whole rear end is toast. Previous owner beat the daylights out of it they guessed because I sure haven't. Quoted me at 975 for a whole rear end thats been inspected and has got like 100,000 miles on it and 6 month warranty that comes with it, then 250 for labor of putting it in. Is that a good price?

yea, for that price on a stock rear, youre getting shafted. look around first, you can find a built one for that price or cheaper.

yea, tell that guy to **** off, i could build you a brand new 31 spline rear end for that much.

Don't walk away from that deal RUN! You should be able to get your rear end rebuilt for around $500 parts and labor. Maybe a little more if you don't shop around for the parts.

Okay. He said rebuilding it wouldn't be that great because he doesn't know how much of the rear end is jacked up, he was thinkin the gears were probably shredded up as well. He said the driveshaft had a ton of play in it and the was leaking a massive amount of diff fluid.

So whats a more reasonable price for a whole new rear axle and installed?

I've called about 6 different mechanics and all have quoted me in that 1200-1400 range for a rebuild. One guy told me anywhere from 2000-3000 for a whole axle swap which i thought was a joke.
