figuring out the rear end ratio
a friend of mine has recently bought a 99 GT with some mods. he got it from an auction so doesnt know much of the history, is there any way of telling the gear ratio just by taking off the pumpkin cover?
Jack up your car. Put it in neutral and have someone rotate the rear tire( i dont think it matters what side your pick but do it for both, I did the right rear) 1 full revolution. And you count how many times the driveshaft turns(use a piece of chalk to mark the driveshaft and tire for a more accurate measurment). I had to do this with my car and I check it 5 times and I got a little over 3 1/2 turns, 3 3/4, 3 3/4, 3 3/4 and a little over 3 3/4 so I have 3.73 gears in my car. 3 1/2 woud be 3.55's almost four turns is 3.90's little over 4 is 4.10's and 3 1/4 is 3.27's. Do it a couple times to get the most accurate ratio.
I never thought about that. Thats a pretty smart way to do it. You could just give us some 5th gear RPM's and what speeds and we could tell you. But the revolution thing would work.
