Default DIY Head porting

Hey guys I'm planning on porting my own heads myself. Anyone got any experience with this? Any tips are appreciated. BTW if your just gonna tell me to get it professionally done don't post your opinion please. I've already decided that I'm going to do this myself.

I've heard that it's very difficult to DIY and get anything out of it other than practice. I have also heard that you can end up losing hp if you mess something up. If you have the time and patience to DIY then go for it just be careful and let us know how it works for ya. Have you got a PI intake yet? Maybe you could get that and try porting that too. That way if you bought the PI intake you could practice the porting on the old intake and then then work on the PI. Good luck sk8terdude

Great idea I didn't think about that. in fact I have 2 non PI intake manifolds I could practice on. Also I'm getting a set of heads from a friend who just did a swap on a truck. So I'll have some practice. I'll be very conscious about the quality of my practice heads. I want to get this done right and if I don't think I can do it I'm not afraid to admit it lol. I've been reading tons about it and so far it seems like it might be fun.

look up a diy flow bench you can build one pretty cheap that will help a lot. but nothing is gonna be the same as experience you don't have a set of cast iron heads designed in the 60's you have a set of fairly high tech heads that are computer designed to give the most they can. if you don't know what you are doing you can really screw things up.

Well so far from what I've read... The idea of porting the heads is to increase CFM. Not just by making it bigger but by removing obstructions and sharp bends. Going to big can reduce airflow speed and lower the CFM but not going big enough is restrictive. If I can get a benchflow I'll incrementally port untill I get a desired CFM at .550 lift

Exactly, if everone knew the little tricks these guys would not be able to make as much money. Head porting takes alot of skill and practice, every head is different and it takes a long time to get good.

I'm a very science oriented guy. I don't only like to know what works but I want to know how it works. That way I can improve it. So far the best sounding method I've heard is extrude honing.

Whats the point of porting your heads at this point? Are you going to put a cam in, or new rockers, valve springs?
