Default Gears..

Ok i just got some extra cash, about 900. Im thinking about putting gears in my 98. Im guessing i have a 8.8 rear end correct? I think im going to go with 3.73 because i have to drive it in the winter and in kansas our winters suck, so would traction in snow with a 5 speed and some 3.73's be a problem? lol Oh and how hard is it to install gears?

the only problem is your foot. if you don't get ansy and put the pedal down hard, you won't have a problem. it'll be like driving with stock gears. don't bother trying to do the install yourself, get a professional to do it. if i were you, i'd go with 4.10s.

if the mechanic you speak of has never done a gear swap before, i wouldn't recommend having him or her do it.

like i said before, the only problem you'll have in the snow is with your foot.

Good performance or dyno shops will generally have someone who is experienced with doing gear changes. As nanaki said, go with 4.10 gears while you're in there. The parts plus the labor shouldn't run more than $500 - $550 so you'll have money left over from your $900

If you know someone who's experienced you can do it yourself. I installed my gears with my uncle. It took us about 12 hours totall time but I think it was worth it instead of paying someone like 3-500 bucks.

Go with 4.10's but don't rule out 4.30's.

4.30's were the best mod I had for my 02 GT.
