Default P0340 code camshaft position sensor

I have 175k miles on my 2004 mustang gt automatic with the service engine light on. I have replaced the CMP with a motorcraft brand and no luck in eliminating the problem. the car is running poorly, backfiring, hard to start. any suggestions on what I need to do?

This is for issues with the forum i.e. the website.

You need to post in the 2004 section.

Have the alternator checked, specifically for excessive ac current ripple. "Dirty" voltage output from the alternator can cause this dtc and it is fairly common.
